Chipping of ceramic‐based dental materials by micrometric particles

چکیده

Chipping caused by micrometric particles poses a threat to the structural integrity of modern dental prosthetic materials. It can degrade their fracture strength and cause wear both artificial crowns antagonist teeth. Here, surface chipping main types commercial ceramic-based materials at microcontact/particle level is investigated means indentation tests. Conical tips different sizes (radii 20 200 μm) under axial sliding loading are employed simulate individual microcontacts. Both decreasing particle size adding lateral contact force decrease load below typical bite forces. Specific damage mechanisms identified as predominantly brittle in ceramics with small, equiaxed crystals, significant quasi-plastic containing large, elongated crystals composites. Critical loads for occurrence quantified (lowest values glass–ceramics; greatest zirconia) analyzed within framework mechanics. The brittleness index (BI) proposed simple indicator resistance materials—the lower BI, greater resistance. Special attention paid effect materials’ microstructure, which result transformation toughening (as or behavior lithium disilicate), highly beneficial increasing Finally, practical implications selection current well development novel improved durability discussed.

An analysis of chipping in brittle materials

The chipping process in a brittle material subjected to a uniformly applied edge load has been investigated. The present analysis extends earlier work by recognizing that as the chip is formed it may bend and change the loading at the crack tip. This geometry change introduces a nonlinear effect and has significant influence on the phenomenon. The nonlinear effect was demonstrated by incorporat...

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF DENTAL COMPOSITE MATERIALS REINFORCED WITH MICRO AND NANO-SIZE Al2O3 FILLER PARTICLES

Abstract: Composite specimens were prepared by dispersion of various amounts of nano-sized Al2O3 fillers in a monomer system containing 60% Bis-GMA and 40% TEGDMA. For comparative purposes, composite samples containing micrometer size Al2O3 fillers were also prepared following the same procedure. The mechanical properties of the light- cured samples were assessed by three-point flexural strengt...

Epidemiological data on the periodontal health and oral hygiene practices of young individuals in Latin America are limited. This study was conducted in a sample of 355 first-year students randomly selected from 3,251 new students entering the largest university in Colombia. Participants received a periodontal examination and were interviewed about oral hygiene practices. Specifically, this stu...

Smoothing a rock by chipping.

We investigate an idealized model for the size reduction and smoothing of a polygonal rock due to repeated chipping at corners. Each chip is sufficiently small so that only a single corner and a fraction of its two adjacent sides are cut from the object in a single chipping event. After many chips have been cut away, the resulting shape of the rock is generally anisotropic, with facet lengths a...
